I've been reading a lot recently about how good Nellymary's citrus cleaner is. Read more here as well. Now, I am ashamed to admit that we actually have a lot of oranges and limes lying around on the ground. We just have so many. That's sort of an incredibly lame excuse.
This morning I got out my trug and collected them up.
Gave them a wash and then peeled the rind off as per recipe. Consensus seems to be that if you peel the rind to get rid of the pith and white stuff the cleaner is a wee bit nicer.
Next I half filled jars with vinegar then added the rind. I need to leave this now for around 2 weeks or so to let all the oils come out and voila! An amazing cleaner. People have been using this for everything, and absolutely love it.
Oh and you dilute it half as much again with vinegar before using.
Now I had all these peeled limes and oranges. What to do? Juice them obviously! So I got almost a bottle of pure orange juice, just to drink, and a jug of lime juice which I'm going to put into cubes and freeze. We'll use this for cooking and ice cubes - yummy.
Still had the totally used up skins left so I composted the lime ones and gave the orange ones, as well as all the pith to the chickens! They love oranges.
So all in all a very productive morning.
Thanks Nellymary!
You have been busy, and what a great resource you have in your own back yard!
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas!!! I just love that first photo.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to use up that fruit. I love the cleaner in the jars.
ReplyDeleteI'm always pleased to see another jar of citrus cleaner on the go...makes me feel good....And publishing your photo on my blog too
ReplyDeleteLaura; thanks for linking to my blog.
Excellent use of the whole fruit! I'll definitely try this.

We've got quite a bit of citrus too, limes on our trees, lemons, oranges and tangelos we were given. Great idea about the citrus cleaner. I use vinegar to clean my windows, usually put a drop of lavender oil in but citrus would be much better. Will be giving this a go also.
