Sprouting!
We were watching a food programme on tv the other day and they were sprouting pulses. We eat a lot of sprouting things in salads so thought this might be quite fun.
Before we moved to NZ I used to joke that all I wanted to do was grow alfalfa. I actually didn't really know what alfalfa was, but I liked the sound of the word. Anyway, we didn't manage to find any alfalfa today, but we did get 4 other things, peas, chick peas, moong/mung beans and adzuki beans. So the experiment begins!

We went to Bin Inns to get the beans we wanted.
Then I drilled holes in some containers

this'll let the air in.

then we put the beans/chic peas into their containers and added water

I may have to top up the water once they've soaked for a wee while.
What I've read is that the adzuki and mung beans need to be soaked for 8-10 hours, the peas 12-14 hours and the chick peas 24-48 hours. Then it's case of draining them and washing and rinsing every day until they reach the size you want. We've not done this before so I'm excited to see what happens.

  1. I've just been catching up with yourblog from the last week or so - nice to Bubble and Squeak! They look pretty happy. And what fabulous aerial pics, I'll have to do that one day. I'm missing being away from my animals and garden these last few days but home again soon.

  2. I've spouted mung beans many times in a jam jar but I'll be interested to see how the others turn out.

  4. What a fantastic blog - your views are amazing. Love the pics of the animals - we have a dog who doesnt take to having his fringe cut and spends the week after looking confused!
