If you don't keep chickens, there is no reason for you to know that they have a rest from egg laying. Once a year ( roughly) they moult. This means they get rid of their old feathers and grow new ones. It takes a lot of energy to do this so they stop laying eggs. Also in winter ~ I'm in the Southern Hemisphere ~ the daylight hours are shorter and chickens like light. I have 12 chickens. Until a week or so ago I was getting no eggs, not a one, nope, nada. I hadn't had an egg for about 10 weeks. I love them anyway, of course!
Now they have started to lay again and this makes me happy. I am especially happy that one of my wee chickens, Sparrow, lays these beautiful spotty eggs, how cute!
I love the spotted eggs too! They are always my favourite! They look like wild bird eggs, only bigger.
ReplyDeleteLovely egg pic!
That is so heartfelt and lovely Laura. Sparrow is a special lady clearly.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture of the eggs. Enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteThat is exciting news - loving the Sparrow ones especially.
ReplyDeleteWe have 12 chooks too and there was great excitement yesterday when 3 eggs were found! Yippee at last - it really goes against the grain to actually have to buy eggs!
What a happy, thankful posting. Love hearing about your girls.
