It's been almost a week...

since I last wrote! I have no idea where the time is going in the run up to Christmas. We seem to be rushing about every day. And with that in mind, yesterday we took the afternoon off and went to our favourite fish and ship place up at Mangonui.
Here's me modelling some of the catch! ( I particularly like the chocolate ice cream growing out of my shoulder!)
As ever the food was lovely - they've added salt and pepper squid to their menu so we had to give that a go as it's one of our favourites - it didn't disappoint.

We spent a lovely few hours up  north and on the drive back home we admired the many pohutakawas that are out in full flower. They're more commonly known as the New Zealand Christmas tree and I absolutely love them.
The only one in the north island that hasn't come into flower yet would seem to be our one!! If it doesn't hurry up it won't make it for Christmas, and we'll just have to make do with this one!
I'm going to try and make time to take some photographs of the veggie garden today, as it's looking good and things are really coming on now.

  1. I am just curious because I live in a landlocked prairie state: Are there people where you live who do not like seafood? Or is it more like a national requirement given your proximity to it?

  2. I think it's a requirement! There is a real historical hunter gatherer mentality here, so if you can get your food at no cost then you should - seafood in plentiful ( well sort of - got to stick to quotas which is a very good thing) so lots of people fish, dive, hunt. I dive for crayfish a lot and scallops and we gather pipis from the beach at low tide. It's just what people do. If we were landlocked I suppose we'd eat a lot more rabbits, and wild pigs :)

  3. Nice to have you back! My vege garden is absolutely dismal - combination of new soil, too much rain and no warmth! Ah well. Hope you have a truly lovely Christmas, Laura. Alison xxx

  4. It makes perfect sense to me and it is so super cool that you can go easily harvest your own food (outside of a garden). That said, I've never in my life liked any sort of seafood (I wonder if I'd like fresh-harvested-myself-seafood...). I know there are people in Montana that enjoy it, but not any with a real passion aside for trout which we can wild catch here....which also makes geographical sense. Thanks for answering my question!

  5. Ahh, nothing beats Mangonui fish and chips... and just need to report that there are some NZers that don't really like seafood - I am strictly a fish only girl... no shellfish etc, but I know people who don't even do fish! Perhaps it depends how you were raised??

Sounds like a perfect afternoon to me! I was never a huge seafood eater but since going vego a few years ago it's the only meatish thing I ever miss, which is a bit strange! We did used to love going out for fish and chips in summer... Wishing you a very, very Merry Chirstmas!
