This is coming right at us!

Oh oh. The red dot is roughly us. So tropical cyclone on the way, then.

And this is what the seas are going to be like. Now, we're not near the coast, but I don't think I've ever seen a map as bad as this for swells since we've lived here. The darkest colour means 8m swells.
It's eerily calm just now, not a breath of wind and just light cloud, but we've been warned that this is on it's way for about 5 days now.
I've spent the morning staking things up in the veggie garden - dunno how much good it'll do, I know they're just vegetables but I'll be so sad if it gets trashed.
Off to buy some more bungy thingies to tie stuff down - we went through all the ones we had last night. I suppose it's best to prepare for the worst, then it might not happen. One good thing about this storm is it's supposed to pass very quickly and hopefully it'll be downgraded as well.

You can read more about it here HERE ( which is also where I got the photographs from)
Think I've gone off the name Wilma.

I'm joining in with Rhonda's On My Mind, today. Because it sure is!

  2. Oh my gosh you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers. We had 'Wilma' blast over us a little over 5 years ago and I hope we never have to go through that again.

Love and hugs to you Laura ~ FlowerLady

  4. Hmm that little red dot looks awfully small! We are also talking about big storms here, but ours has a boy's name, I can't for the life of me remember what it is though.

Batten down the hatches Laura, that's one little island you're on there!

  6. Oh no.....stay safe Laura.

I didn't realise you got cyclones in NZ. Earthquakes, cyclones you get the lot down there.

    Will be thinking you.

  7. thanks everyone. It is absolutely pouring down now but no wind yet. It's the wind that gets me - we have a huge tree down from last weekend that we haven't dealt with yet!
The rain's actually quite nice, it's that straight down tropical stuff and it's still really hot.

  10. Laura, I so hope it calms down and misses you. It is so disheartening to work on your gardens and then a storm just wipe it out. That has happened to us a few times. I sure hope you and your animals are all safe and dry.

  11. We'll be thinking of you. Stay safe and remember that as heart-breaking as it might be if your beautiful veggies get hit - they can be replaced. The priority here is you and your animals.
Enjoy the rain and hopefully "Wilma" will change her mind and disappear!

  12. we're anticipating it to too, though probably won't get it as much as you. hubby is out currently in the rain banging in more pegs to keep our vineyard nets on. they blew half off one year and it was horrendous trying to put them back on. haven't fixed up my tomatoe stakes from last weeks deluge, maybe after this one has gone through!

  16. It's getting very hairy now. Wind is just beginning to get up, rain is absolutely torrential - our river has completely burst its banks ( no danger though) Donks are sort of in stable. Cows are under trees and stupid chooks are up the tree. I got them into their house and they all snuck out under the door - the instinct is too strong - I hope they're ok.

  17. Hope you are ok. I have friends in WA Australia who are facing a Cat 1 cyclone called Bianca today. It started offshore as a Cat 3 so here's wishing Wilma blows herself out before she arrives at NZ coastline. Can you shove those silly chooks in with the donkeys as I wouldn't like their chances in trees?
