Tomatoes Galore!

We now have our first large haul of tomatoes. It's a mix of pink brandywine, moneymaker and beefsteak. It was an absolute joy to pick them as they're all lovely big tomatoes. Last year I planted a real mixter maxter but in the end they were almost all small varieties and took eons to pick. A mistake you only make once. I think I will plant a cherry again next year, just because they are so nice in salads, but I'm glad to have only humungous toms this year.
We were thinking about making some tomato sauce but didn't manage to find a simple recipe, they were all very detailed! So if anyone has a simple tomato sauce recipe and is willing to part with it we'll be very grateful.
We ended up going for good old faithful passata. We do a simple passata
It freezes and you can use it as a base for pasta sauces or reduce down for pizza topping, or whatever else you fancy.

  1. Fantastic first tomato pick! I am thinking along the same lines as you for larger tomato varieties for next year. Cherry toms, regardless that they are so tasty, are time consuming to pick. Although, they make for great snacking while watering!!!!

  4. We had a look at that one, Sue as we watched him make it on one of his programmes- he made it look easy! It's got an awful lot in it though.
I was thinking really really simple!

  8. How lovely. I did the same this year - lots of BIG toms because I got fed up of trying to make sauce out of tons of little ones, but I'm in trouble with the rest of the family for not planting enough cherries!

  12. Great stuff. Yes I concur about picking the small ones. Although I do like a few cherry ones, hubby is not fussed about them.

Have posted a tomato sauce recipe on my blog if you want to take a look. Takes a while to make but not that many ingredients.

  13. We have mostly cherries this year with some beefies, some black krims and some romas. The chooks have been gorging themselves when I'm not looking, but there are plenty to spare.
