And it is absolutely miniscule - only slightly larger than a quails egg but perfectly formed.
I thought she was going to lay soon as a couple of days ago she was sitting on top of Maude when she was in the nesting box laying her egg. Maude was completely unfazed.
Edna's sister Mavis hasn't laid anything yet, so perhaps it won't be long now.
The chickens are doing amazingly. Up until today I had 10 laying chickens - some of which are 4 years old now and more often that not I was getting 9 or 10 egg a day! Now there's 11 laying. Good old Edna.
This is Edna, she's a beautiful Silver Laced Wyandotte
And Mavis, her sister, a gold laced Wyandotte.
Here's some of the other's having a wee snack, King Bertie's bottom, Elizabeth and Gertrude.
Two days worth of eggs!
Aren't they beautiful? Do you eat your duck eggs too?

Oh! We've got 4 plates the same as your bowl....hand-painted from Living Art...they look Portuguese!

Sue, on the rare occasion when I could find a duck egg we ate them! They were completely free ranging and hid them really, really well. I rehomed my girl ducks at our friends house - she has a huge pond some distance away from the house - we were finding that 19 ducks stamping around on the deck making the most horrendous racked was a bit much! But I wanted to keep some so decided on the three boys - they were just young and had never had a girlfriend before, so I thought, what they don't know wont hurt them! (if they got sad and depressed they were ok to go to the pond too) but they seem delighted to still be here and are spoiled rotten by us and our lovely neighbour who entices them over with tit bits!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have some really good layers! Now you just need some chickens that will lay green, blue, and chocolate colored eggs for some extra variety.
ReplyDeleteThats one nice chookie bottom,,I do love the fluffy bums...
ReplyDeleteI have a Mavis, and Audrey....who are laying beautifully...now we are getting two small white eggs from the new girls, Valmai and Tiffany, Kate is yet to lay....we got rather a large white one today and I suspect it will be a double yolker,,,I love them!
It is always lovely when new girls start laying, quite the celebration.....
I love Edna isn't she beautiful. Two of my silkies are broody at the moment so I'm only getting three eggs a day. Today I re-arranged things out near their run and they were so funny to watch. They're not so bright and because something was a bit different they kept going back and forth wondering why they couldn't get back the way they usually do.
ReplyDeleteYour girls are beauties. I would love to have a bowl of those fresh wonderful eggs.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting. It must be wonderful to have so many freshly laid eggs on hand. I can just imagine a freshly baked, yellowy sponge cake made from these. Yum.
ReplyDeleteEdna is certainly a beautiful looking lady.
Oh Edna is gorgeous! Mavis' comb isn't so red so she might be a little way off laying. I'm keeping her brother, the big (huge) GLW boy you gave me and I was going to keep one of the araucana boys but he's a s*x maniac and giving the girls a hard time ;) so he has to go.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous girls and what lovely eggs. And I LOVE King Berties bottom!!
ReplyDeleteSue xx
Charlotte I'm so glad you're keeping that GLW boy, he was absolutely gorgeous! And you just knew he was goin to be huge! That araucana - he was called Craig and I know he was super handsome but he was mental with the girls! King Bertie is totally gentle and rather timid!
ReplyDeleteThey are just perfect! A question if I may Laura. How do you (ahem....) manage to the get the right breed of girls with the right boys? Mine are ending up all very haphazard so nowhere near as pretty - still productive though. Hope you have settled right back in now. Alison
ReplyDeleteAlison, the easy answer to that is I don't! Up until a few months ago I didn't have a rooster so last year when I got a broody chicken I bought in fertile eggs - Ms Lottie gave me some and when she didn't have any I bought them online! That way you can choose a good breeder and see photos of their chickens and pick what you like! Of course there's the chance you end up with loads of boys which I did this year. Out of 12 fertile eggs this year I only got three girls!
ReplyDeleteKIng Bertie is an araucana and I don't have any araucana girls so if I get a broody this year - which I will - I'll hatch a couple of his crossbreed eggs but will buy in again as well. Ms Lottie breeds lovely chickens and keeps the breeds in separate runs when she wants to breed.
oh yes! we're settled in fine now - Dan who stayed an extra week spend a couple of days with Nyoman and sent pics to make us jealous!
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww they are gorgeous and giving you so much love and eggs! Love the huge light sussex. I'd LOVE a full size chook...but I don't think my garden could cope!!
ReplyDeleteEdna and Mavis really are both stunningly beautiful creatures. I don't have chickens yet (landlord was not keen on the idea), but we are saving for a house and raising chickens for eggs is high on my list of dreams.
ReplyDeleteOooh so jealous. Lucky lucky Dan. I'm wondering if maybe I might go roosterless for awhile. I do love my two aracuana boys though!
ReplyDeleteOh Oh Oh haow pretty these girls and boys are! Yummy fresh eggs!
