Chickens are funny!

I have three chicken houses. The big one, and 2 little ones. The 2 little ones I really use as broody houses, but now that I have 13 laying chickens I like to give them a bit of variety for where they might like to lay their eggs so I opened up one of the broody houses for them. It would seem they rather like it - in fact they like it better than their lovely big house...
I should explain...first pic is Maude in the nesting box laying an egg - see her grey feathers - she's coming up for 5 now but still laying almost every day.

Second pic is Mathilda and Abigail queuing to get in and lay in the same nesting box.
I should point out that there are actually 2 nesting boxes in this house, but only one of them will do!

Third pic is Mathilda and Abigail, with Gertrude and Mabel joining the queue!

Geraldine is the sensible one - she's laying her egg in the lovely big house. She's filthy because she was just having a dust bath.

King Bertie is just bemused by the whole thing and who can blame him.

  1. Sweet girls and King Bertie really does look quite regal, doesn't he? How many eggs do you get?

  2. we're averaging 11 a day. Mavis is still not ready to lay and my older ones to one every day or so. It's amazing. I only have 13 chickens. We are totally over run with eggs - I can't give them away fast enough!

  4. Even with eight laying hens I am giving eggs away regularly! I posted the other day about my hens and their preference for a particular nest box. I put a couple of eggs in the unpopular box and they all laid in there the next day...you are right, hens are funny!

  5. Hens are funny that way! Mine used to line up like that too, all using the same nesting box.

I am between hens at the moment and really miss them!

  6. We are new with the whole chickens thing. They are simply desperate to get out and free range but I am wondering how bad our block will look in a few months from their scratching and dust baths.

Our chickens also prefer the one nesting box (with the golf ball in it).

Now if only our Elizabeth stopped laying in the cubby house and our dog stopped eating the eggs!!

p.s loved this post and the photos!

They are so sweet and it seems like they have a lot of personality. It must be so much fun being around them.

  13. They all look great and with such personalities. Funny that one box is the most preferred. I just today finally got three chicks--hopefully all will go well and we'll have eggs come next spring!
